The entrance to Takoradi cemetery, which used to be a Royal Air Force base and still houses a control tower.
We will be visiting the Takoradi European Public Cemetery and the Commonwealth War Graves that are sited there. The cemetery contains two First World War Commonwealth burials and sixty-two of the Second World War. In addition there are four war graves of other nationalities and sixteen non-World War burials there.
Each member of Expedition Jubilee Eagle will be assigned a number of graves to photograph and will research details, history and family links of the people buried there.
The headstone photographs will be submitted to the South Africa War Graves Project archives and posted on this website so that anyone who wants to view a serviceman's headstone and details will be able to do so.
Together with National Cadet Corps Ghana, we will be honouring the war dead buried at Takoradi who were from the United Kingdom, Ghana, South Africa, Canada, Australia, France, the Netherlands and Norway. Present at the service will be dignitaries representing several of these countries and the central band of the Ghana Air Force.
The day will involve a formal parade and memorial service to honour the sacrifice that was made on our behalf to ensure the freedom of Ghana, the UK and the Commonwealth.
