I found out about the Air Training Corps four years ago and joined 342 (Ealing & Brentford) Squadron, where I am now a Flight Sergeant. At first my parents were unsure about my participation as they did not know much about the ATC, but once they saw the fantastic opportunities cadets offered they were happy to let me join.
During my time at 342 I have gained physically, personally and academically. By competing in sporting events such as swimming, netball, football, hockey and athletics, I have been able to keep fit, improving my stamina and fitness. I have attended various annual and adventure training camps, where I have enjoyed flying and sailing amongst many other activities. I participated in an overseas camp to Quantico, Virginia, where we stayed with the United States Marine Corps!
I enjoy shooting but unfortunately it is not my forte, however, I recently managed to gain my region marksman, albeit after many attempts! Flying and gliding plays a key role within the ATC and I have been lucky enough to gain my gliding wings after a week long course. I have completed my bronze Duke of Edinburgh’s Award and hopefully will achieve my gold in Ghana! I have completed my Staff exam and consequently gained extra GCSEs, which is always helpful!
I am currently in my first year at university, where I am reading for a degree in law and politics. Although I am not Catholic I have attended a pilgrimage to Lourdes, France for the past two years. The purpose of my trip was to help Malades perform their pilgrimage and to learn about different cultures and religions, something which interests to me.
The main reason for why I applied to go to Ghana was because of the school project that we are going to undertake. I was shocked to see how poorly equipped the school was. They do not even have a proper blackboard, something which we no longer have, as we now have electronic white boards!
