Command Team › Flight Lieutenant: Haydyn "H" Tanner RAFVR(T)

Haydyn

I have been a member of the Air Training Corps since the age of 13. I joined as a Cadet at 120 (Hendon) Squadron in 1982, moving to 2236 (Stanmore) Squadron on promotion to Cadet Warrant Officer. In 1990 I was commissioned in the Volunteer Reserve (Training) Branch of the Royal Air Force and posted to 268 (Tottenham) Squadron. Three years later, I was appointed as the Officer Commanding of 85 (Enfield School) Detached Flight and six months later, Commanding Officer of 85 (Enfield & Southgate) Squadron. In 2001, I joined Middlesex Wing Staff in the role of Wing Adventure Training & Technical Officer (WATTO) responsible for all the Adventure Training undertaken by the Wing and its Squadrons.

I am a qualified Outdoor Instructor with both Military and Civilian qualifications. I hold the Mountain Leader Training Board Summer assessment, the Advanced Joint Service Mountain Expedition Leader Summer award, Scottish Rafting Association Level Two White Water Raft Guide and I am a qualified First Aider to above ’First Aid at Work’ standard.

I was the Officer Commanding of Expeditions Volcano Eagle to Ecuador and Steppes Eagle to Mongolia, both of which have won the Shackleton Trophy for the Best Overseas Air Cadet Expedition. I have led overseas expeditions to the following countries: Belize; Bavaria, Germany (three times); Ecuador (twice); Zambia (twice); Botswana; Namibia; Mongolia (twice); Morocco and Vietnam. These have been mainly youth based expeditions, working with the Air Training Corps or World Challenge Expeditions. I have also led expeditions to all the wild country areas of the United Kingdom.

As I took part in the Intenational Air Cadet Exchange visit to Ghana, the first African exchange, I am looking forward to returning to Ghana with Expedition Jubilee Eagle. This will allow me to revisit friends, work with the National Cadet Corps, Ghana and help Ghana celebrate their 50th Anniversary of their Independence.
